V.A. - Central America In The 1960's and 1970's

When one thinks of the countries of Central America during the 1960's and 1970's the images that come to mind are those of military dictatorships, communist guerrillas, and wars that would have an impact on the region for decades to come. However during this same time period many countries in the region experienced what is often described as a "golden age" of music. Here is a small compilation that I have put together featuring music from various artists and various countries. Throughout you can hear the clear influence that some of the popular western genres like rock an ye-ye had on the local bands sometimes getting mixed with an added tropical flavor. Great download to check out for anyone interested in music from these two decades and for anyone curious about this part of the world that to most outsiders is not really known for its music.

Los Alegres de Teran - Recordando A Los Valientes

I have been very busy with school the past semester and so have not posted much in some time but today we go back to Mexico to listen to one of my favorite artists from the northern part of the country, Los Alegres de Teran. I have posted some of their music before and mentioned that they are the ones who are mainly responsible for making "musica norteña" popular throughout the country as well as internationally. This particular album "Recordando A Los Valientes" (Remembering The Brave Ones) is made up of songs dedicated to some of the various heroes of Mexico. People like Heraclio Bernal who many years before the 1910 Mexican Revolution was already fighting to overthrow the dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz. 
This is an excellent album if you enjoy north Mexican music and as in typical "corrido" fashion you would like to learn some history while enjoying your music.

V.A. - Radio Zid - Rock Under The Siege Sarajevo

I will say that for the most part I am not the greatest fan of live albums however the one I am bringing to you today is one of those few exceptions and the story behind this album makes it all the more amazing.  Rock Under The Siege was put together in 1995 in Sarajevo in the middle of the longest military siege in modern history. Prior to the war in Bosnia, Sarajevo had been a center for many rock, punk, ska, etc. bands that had been influenced by their peers in the west. As the war commenced Radio Zid became one of the only radio stations in all of Sarejvo to continue broadcasting music. Often times resulting n many DJs and radio broadcasters literally risking or losing their lives simply trying to get to their work. In 1995 in the midst of some of the most intense fighting Radio Zid put together a concert with some of the bands that remained in Sarejvo. There is some great material on this album however I will go ahead and say that my version is not complete it only contains a few tracks from what would be the full album. Even an actual physical copy seems almost impossible to find online so if anyone knows where to find or buy the full album please let me know. None the less the version I am uploading has some great material, personal favorites are the live and studio versions of Sara's Dream by Lezi Majmune.  Check this album out it is a great introduction into the little known rock scene of Bosnia and the former Yugoslavia a great album worth giving a listen to.

V.A. Studio One - Scorcher Instrumentals

Today we have something for any lovers of reggae and jazz that may be out there. As any fan of reggae can tell you the Studio One record label is synonymous with some of the best artists and music to come out of Jamaica. One of the greatest assets of Studio One was its amazing selection of instrumental players who would put down tracks in the 1960's and 70's that to this day continue to influence the Jamaican music scene. This included  groups and musicians like The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo, The Soul Vendors, and Tommy McCook all of  which can be heard on this album. This album does an amazing job of highlighting the amazing instrumental tracks that were produced during the golden age of Jamaican music as well as demonstrating the influence that outside music had on the Jamaican music scene.The influence of jazz will clearly be seen in these tracks. Not to mention tracks like Lester Sterling's - African Beat which is clearly based on the classic Afrikkaan Beat by Bert Kaempfert. Overall this is a great album which I highly recommend as there is no way any music lover could be disappointed with these classic Studio One tracks.

Various Artists - Cracks in The Iron Curtain Part 1

Today's post comes from the great blog over at http://michaelvee.livejournal.com which I highly recommend checking out if you are a fan of pure 60's rock. This compilation basically captures what were many of the 60's era artists in Eastern Europe. Of course what one must keep in mind is that at this time period in almost any East European country playing any form of rock or western music could get you a lot of unwanted attention from the government. Records and recordings for a lot of these groups were often quite rare since the material was almost entirely homemade. If you are a fan of any type of rock music especially the classic stuff from the 60's then I highly recommend giving this compilation a listen.

Philemon Zulu - How Long- Zulu Jive

Any true reggae lover will recognize Shanchie as one of the great reggae labels having put out albums by such legends as Augustus Pablo. However Shanchie's killer records are not limited only to reggae but include various other genres including music from various different countries. So whenever I am in a record store and happen to find a Shanchie record I usually will buy it and take it home with me. The latest of these additions is an album from Southern Africa, "How Long" by Philemon Zulu. This album is clear evidence of the great music that the African continent has been able to produce by blending traditional song with modern instruments. This is also an album that would be great for anyone looking for an introduction into the world of African music specifically South African music. Overall an album that I am very much glad I found and recommend giving a listen to.

Minor Threat - Complete Discography

To this day Minor Threat is one of my favorite punk bands and one that I think played a crucial role in the original punk music scene of the 1970's and 1980's. The thing that Minor Threat is best known for besides their fast and angry sounds is their "straight edge" lyrics. The term straight edge comes from a song of the same name by Minor Threat which describes the band's frustration mainly with drugs and alcohol and how the world especially young people are obsessed with these things. The thing that to me makes Minor Threat unique is that while certain artists preach one thing and practice a whole other thing Minor Threat and especially their vocalist Ian MacKaye really practiced what he preached. Ian would even often times refuse to play shows were people of all ages were not allowed in because of alcohol being served.
This is one of those bands that much like The Clash and others that I have posted on the blog I not only enjoy their music but also agree with their message. If you like any form of rock or punk rock and have never heard of these guys than I strongly recommend you give them a listen.

Rolando Alarcon - Por Cuba y Vietnam

Many people have heard of Victor Jara and many (rightfully so) identify him as a key figure in the music of Chile and its' political message especially during the time of the coup against president Salvador Allende. However today we will look at another Chilean folk musician from the same era with much the same message as Victor Jara but much less well known. While very well known in Chile, Rolando Alarcon is for the most part unknown to the outside world especially outside of the Spanish speaking world. His music is very much what one would expect from a very traditional folk musician, music with lots of passion, sentiment, and many times music with a strong message. The album that I am making available for download "Por Cuba y Vietnam" (Through Cuba and Vietnam) shows the strong sentiment of solidarity that many Latin American musicians felt with the Socialist and Communist nations as the US and other western powers extended their influence and stranglehold over the Latin America. This is definitely an album worth checking out if you enjoy any sort of folk or traditional music as it will not disappoint.

Grand Prix (1966)

Someone recently brought to my attention that while the blog is called "Lightning Strikes Music and Whatever Else" the blog is mostly made up of music and little to go into the "whatever else" category. So to help remedy this I thought I would share one of my favorite movies the 1960's classic Grand Prix. The movie revolves around the professional and personal lives of a few Formula 1 drivers as they struggle to deal with the pressures and dangers of motorsport. Grand Prix does an excellent job of capturing what early
Formula 1 consisted of...fast cars, good looking girls, and danger in every corner.  This is a relatively long movie at almost 4 hours however there is plenty of action and drama throughout to keep you more than entertained and I should mention that even though auto racing is obviously a main part of the plot even someone who has never seen a Formula 1 race in their lives or knows nothing of the sport can enjoy this great movie.

DJ Algoriddim

Now we take a look at not really any specific artist but instead one of my favorite music channels on Youtube "djalgoriddim". This channel is truly any old school reggae lovers dream as it compiles many of the most popular and influential "riddims"that have made their way through the Jamaican music scene. A riddim is basically the music featured in a song or in other words the instrumental portion. Another way to think of it would be like a cover however different versions of a riddim can sometimes contain different lyrics or no lyrics at all etc. This has its origins in the early days of ska and rocksteady when the Jamaican labels would do their own takes on jazz classics from the US and to avoid paying the western labels they would rename the songs and thus the "riddim"was born. So unlike in the west where copying even a small part of another artists work be it vocal or instrumental is often looked down upon in Jamaica it is fairly common even in the music scene today An example of a riddim that had origins in the US would be that of The Russians Are Coming by Val Bennet which is known as the "Take Five riddim"since it is based on the classic Take Five by Dave Brubeck.
Really recommend checking this channel out even if you are not a lover of reggae as many of the classic riddims had their roots in other genres like jazz, soul, funk, and rock so you might find something you didn't even know existed.

The Carter Family - Great Original Recordings

Today we look at arguably one of the most influential group of artists in the history of music in the United States, The Carter Family. The group began recording in 1927 and would continue to do so until the 1950s though some of the members in the group would change throughout the years. The Carter Family are a staple in folk and country music and would be extremely influential to folk, country, blues, and rock artists from decades to come. Their music is purely classic folk and country and invokes images of a simpler time as well as those of hardship and suffering. I highly recommend giving this album a listen especially if you have never heard of The Carter Family before as you will be introduced to some wonderful and classic American music.

Various Artists - El Lado Mexicano Part 1

Today we go back to Mexico but this time for some pure classic 60's rock. Much the same as I mentioned with Mexican SKA in my previous post early Mexican rock never really received much recognition outside of the country. The Mexican rock scene of the 1960's was very large and obviously influenced by the artists in Britain and the US. Many Mexican bands in fact focused on doing Spanish covers of British and American songs while others just developed a sound of their own. "El Lado Mexicano" is a series with various parts that gives an introduction into the wide world of what is early Mexican rock. I highly recommend this download to anyone with any interest in pure rock music as you will not be disappointed with all the great material that this download contains.

Clasicos del Ska Mexicano (Classic Mexican Ska)

When the genre of Ska comes up the two countries that most people instantaneously think of are Jamaica and England. Jamaica being the birthplace of this music and England were it reached a wider audience. However there is one country that unfortunately has been largely forgotten in the history of Ska and that is Mexico. As any Mexican can tell you Mexico is a very diverse country with influences from just about every corner of the globe and the music is a prime example of this. Now looking at the music industry of Mexico and Jamaica in the 1960's both shared one crucial similarity and that was that record labels were all competing trying to put out the best "sounds" be it things influenced from the rock n' roll scene in the US and in Britain or homegrown stuff. In 1965 though a musician by the name of Toño Quirazco traveled to Jamaica and brought back the beats and sounds of Ska making it a huge hit in the country and also making Mexico one of the first countries outside of the Caribbean to start playing the new music genre. Unfortunately many of the artists and Ska songs from this era are almost impossible to find as the majority of people and even some record labels had no idea of their Jamaican heritage and thus just labeled them under the generic rock or tropical music genre labels making any mention of Mexican Ska in the history books almost non-existent.
Here I have put together a small compilation of some of the best of early Mexican Ska with a main focus on
Toño Quirazco who is the one that brought the genre to Mexico. For anyone who is familiar with this style of music you will be able to see in these songs some major influences from classic Jamaican bands like The Skatalites and Toots & The Maytals.
If you are a fan of ska, reggae, Jamaican or Mexican music than I highly recommend you give this a listen as you will not be disappointed

Various Artists - Afro-Rock Volume 1

For your consideration today I have a great little compilation album that I picked up at a record store a few years ago. Afro-Rock Vol 1 is one of many great releases by Strut Records who for a long time have put out some great compilations focusing on music from around the globe. This particular album has some great material that truly stretches throughout the whole continent of Africa from Nigeria to Zaire (Congo). The thing that really makes this album standout is that while all tracks have some killer rhythms and beats no two sound even remotely alike. Also many of the tracks on here would be a rare find even in Africa as they were unreleased demos or tapes that have long been forgotten about. Personal favorites of mine on this album are Steele Beauttah's "Africa" and Envy No Good by Mercury Dance Band. If you are even remotely interested in Afro-rock or just rock and funk in general then I highly recommend downloading this album as it will have you hooked for a long time to come.

Francoise Hardy - The Vogue Years

It has been a long time since I posted anything from one of my favorite artists.....the French music and beauty icon Francoise Hardy so I thought I would share one of my favorite compilations of her work.
The Vogue Years compiles some of the work from Francoise's early career (which in my opinion is her best) and puts it together in one great compilation. These are the songs that brought her to stardom making her an international icon and making everyone from The Rolling Stones to Bob Dylan wish they could call her "their girlfriend". For anyone who has never heard any of the great music Francoise or 60's French pop and ye-ye in general have to offer than this album will make a great introduction. Likewise this album is great for anyone who may already know Francoise Hardy and her music but just want to have it compiled in two great CD's.

Something From Asia and Something From The Middle East

As I was looking through the blog I realized I have really neglected to present any music from Asia or from the Middle East so I thought today we would fix that. First off we have a great album called "Cambodian Rocks".  I'm sure the last country that most people think of when they think of rock n' roll is Cambodia however before the years of the Democratic Kampuchea and the Khemer Rouge there was actually a fairly large rock scene in the country. One of the most notable artists from this era was Ros Sereysothea who was known as "the lady with the golden voice" and who truly produced some amazing work. Tragically her fate once Pol Pot and the Khemer Rouge came to power was much the same as that of many other Cambodians (including the majority if not all of the artists on the Cambodia Rocks compilation). People were labeled enemies of the state and either executed right then and there or were overworked in death camps. Highly recommend this compilation album as this truly is some great music that very few people outside of the Cambodian community have heard of.

We covered Asia now we move on to the Middle East specifically to Algerian artist Rachid Taha and his 2004 album Tekitoi. Taha has a very unique style combining many styles of music including the traditional Algerian pop known as "rai" and often singing in various different languages. Legend has it that while attending a Clash concert in Paris in 1981 Taha ran into the band shortly before the concert started and gave them a tape with some of his work on it. Some think that this is where The Clash got the inspiration to write the song "Rock The Casbah". Taha himself did a cover of this song (Rock El Casbah), I really recommend this one as Rachid Taha really does produce some very good music and does an excellent job of mixing various music styles which is something that only a few artists seem to be able to do with success.

Joe Strummer's London Calling (All Shows)

After doing a whole lot of searching through the internet I have found all (or at least a good majority of) the London Calling shows that Joe Strummer did for the BBC starting in the late 1990's. These shows contain just about every music genre imaginable from rock to rumba, cumbia, reggae, and everything in between. Joe had an immense record collection that he built up as he traveled around the world and he did an excellent job of sharing it on his show. Where else could you find a radio show that would play Nancy Sinatra, Wu Tang Clan, and Jules Allen (one of the oldest recorded country western artists out there) all one after the other?
If you are reading this I highly recommend you download these shows as there honestly really is something for every music taste here and I can guarantee you will find something you like in these shows you just might not know it yet.

Anybody who follows the blog will know that I am a very big punk rock fan being that bands like The Clash and The Ramones are some of my all time favorites. So I thought I would post some punk rock that is probably unknown to most people. The "Bloodstains" series compiles and releases punk rock from across the world. Bloodstains Across Yugoslavia gives you a chance to listen to some great punk music from the 1970's and 1980's which could easily rival any of  the more well known stuff from the UK and the US.
What one most also consider is that in Yugoslavia like most other East European countries at the time being a "punk" wasn't just a label it was something that could potentially get you in a lot of trouble with the authorities. Overall a great record definitely worth checking out for anyone who likes this genre of music.

Prince Buster - Fabulous Greatest Hits

Prince Buster the king of ska and also one of the greatest musicians to come out of Jamaica. He was one of the first Jamaican artists that I listened to after being introduced to his music by the British 2-Tone bands of the 1980's like The Specials and Madness who covered some of his songs. Until fairly recently he was still doing live tours however Prince Buster's heyday was in the 1960's as he was a pioneer of both ska and rocksteady music. He is known for his often comedic lyrics just have a listen to "10 Commandments" (which has got to be a feminists worst nightmare) or "Big Five" (which at the time was considered extremely crude and thus censored by almost all radio stations in Britain and Jamaica). This album has some great tracks everything from fast paced ska that will make you want to move along to the beat. To the slower and sweeter sounds of rocksteady. I really recommend this one if you want an introduction to one of the greatest musicians to come out of Jamaica or simply just want some great music to add to your collection

Various Artists- Paris After Dark

I recently picked up this CD at a used record store and was really impressed with all the great music that it contains. Paris After Dark compiles songs from the 1920's - 1950's or the classic French chanson period of music. This is the type of music that would play in the cabaret and even brothels of the city during this time period even as the Nazi occupation of France was in full swing during the 1940's the music remained. Highly recommend this one to anyone with any interest in music from France or just from this time period in general as you will not be disappointed by this great little CD.

The Bhundu Boys - Shed Sessions 1982 - 1986

Today we will take a trip all the way to East Africa, specifically to the country of Zimbabwe to listen to the epic sound of The Bhundu Boys. The Bhundu Boys played traditional music from Zimbabwe but with a mixture of rock, disco, and even country. They developed their own sound to the point that they basically created a new genre of music known as "jit". The Shed Sessions will give you a very good introduction to this group and their completely unique style. While also giving you an introduction to some of the coolest music and greatest guitar work to come out of Africa.

Trojan DJ (3) CD Box Set

Trojan Records is synonymous with some of the best music to come out of Jamaica. The Trojan Box set has been an effort by Trojan Records to compile and re-release many of the songs which came out on their label many years ago. The DJ box set is a personal favorite of mine as it compiles many tracks of some of the best DJ's to come out of the Jamaican music scene including Big Youth, Scotty, Dennis Alcapone, U-Roy, and I-Roy. As well as some killer material from some less known DJs.
DJ also known as toasting is essentially the roots of all rap, hip hop, and dancehall music. The genre has its origins when producers and sound systems would have someone toast over an older rocksteady or ska track. This is really a great album which I highly recommend to anyone with any interest in Jamaican music or anything like rap or hip hop as this is the roots of those genres.
